ASSIGNMENT 1: Observing Plant Diseases in Our Environment
Plant diseases are present in farms, gardens, markets, and even along roadsides. As an introduction to this course, you are required to conduct a simple field observation activity to help you gain a general understanding of plant health and disease before we begin formal theoretical lessons. This assignment is designed to stimulate observation skills, curiosity, and independent scientific thinking.
Task
- Visit a farm, home garden, school garden, market, or any area where plants are growing.
- Identify at least two (2) plants showing abnormal symptoms (e.g., leaf spots, wilting, yellowing, rotting, mold growth, deformities, drying).
- Take clear photographs of the affected plants/parts.
The photographs must be your own original images. Internet or downloaded images are strictly not allowed. You are required to bring the photos (printed in colour) to the next lecture for class discussion. Photos should be different from student to student (you can’t have the same).
For each plant observed, print the photographs in colour and clearly highlight the visible symptoms. Below each photograph, provide the name of the plant (if known), the location where it was observed, name of the corrector, and the type of plant (crop, ornamental, weed, fruit, vegetable, etc.). Indicate the plant part affected (leaf, stem, root, fruit, or flower) and give a clear description of the visible symptoms. Estimate the severity of the condition as mild, moderate, or severe, and suggest a possible cause based on your own reasoning. A correct diagnosis is not required at this stage; the focus is on careful observation and logical thinking.
